Alice Bennell to visit South Korea in November

Ever since I first watched Korean historical drama Dae Jang Geum back in 2006, I began to to develop a strong interest in Korean culture. With encouragement from several DJG fans, I set up an online campaign to get Dae Jang Geum shown here in the UK.
And so the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign was formed, this website created, and an online petition set up. The campaign soon caught the attention of the Korean media; in particular a news report by Korean channel YTN News, which attracted 16,000 visitors to this site within a 24-hour period.

It was in 2006 that I first discovered Korean culture. Fast forward 4 years - I find myself the 3rd place winner in a worldwide Korean Literature Essay Contest, and preparing for my first ever trip to the capital of South Korea. So much has happened so quickly...

Since 2005, the Korean Literature Translation Institute in Seoul has held an annual 'Korean Literature Essay Competition' to promote Korean literature throughout the world. Through each country's Korean Embassy and Cultural Centre, the competition is held in 16 countries worldwide.
2009 was the first year the competition was open to UK entrants, so I decided to enter. The rules were simple - read the set text of a Korean masterpiece and write a 2,000 word critical essay.

And so I spent the summer reading Ch'oe Yun's 'There a Petal Silently Falls', a complex story told in a polyphonic narrative. Many found the story difficult to understand, and I was perplexed. Eventually I decided to just write my own thoughts and feelings about the book. Luckily, the judge (a Korean professor at Oxford University) really liked my essay, and awarded my essay 1st place in the UK's first 'Korean Literature Essay Competition'. At the award ceremony in December 2009 (held in London's Korean Cultural Centre), I was presented with my prize - a beautiful hand-painted scroll, and a Samsung laptop.

As the UK winner of last year's essay competition, I was put forward for the international competition (along with essay winners from 15 other countries - America, Canada, Mexico, Peru, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Russia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, China and Japan).

I am very honoured to be named as the 3rd place essay winner worldwide! The Korean Literature Translation Institute have invited me to Seoul for an award ceremony, along with the other 'top 5' winners. I am very excited, this will be my first time visiting South Korea. I look forward to visiting the museums and palaces in Seoul, experiencing Korean cuisine (잘먹겠습니다!), and of course shopping in one of the many Dae-mun markets!

My dream to 'visit Korea one day' has come true! I will be arriving in Seoul (from London) on Wednesday 17th November, and will be spending 5 days in the city.

Spanish TV channel to broadcast 'Dae Jang Geum'

MBC (Munwha Broadcasting Corporation) have announced that Dae Jang Geum will be dubbed into Spanish and shown on Spain's channel TVE from Saturday 6th November.

Dae Jang Geum was first introduced to Europe when Hungarian TV channel MTV first aired the Korean drama in January 2008. Since then, Dae Jang Geum has also been shown in Romania, but this is the first time Dae Jang Geum has reached a Western European country.

Dae Jang Geum vs BBC Masterchef

Much of the appeal of Korean historical drama Dae Jang Geum's is the vivid portrayal of traditional Korean culture and cuisine. In fact, MBC invested five years of research into the pre-production of Dae Jang Geum to ensure historical accuracy.

The strongest argument used by the BBC (on why they will not broadcast Dae Jang Geum) was that it would be too unfamiliar to a UK audience (that, and I suppose it is far easier to spoon-feed audiences what they think they want, rather than enrich their minds).
So, perhaps one way to introduce Dae Jang Geum to a UK audience would be to compare elements from the drama to existing 'familiar' programming.

New Direction for 'Show DJG on BBC'

- Focus of Campaign to shift to UK's Channel 4 -

"The South Korean film industry has become increasingly dynamic and well known in the West in the early 21st century" writes Daniel Etherington on the Channel 4 website.
After 2½ years of campaigning to 'Show Dae Jang Geum' on the BBC, I think the time has come to approach Channel 4, the UK's "significant contributor to film culture through its policy of regular screenings of minority-interest films" (Source: Screenonline)

A New Year, A New Direction for the 'Show DJG on BBC' Campaign
My efforts to get Dae Jang Geum shown on BBC have fallen on deaf ears. The BBC are simply not interested. "We do not have the capacity for DJG" claims BBC's Sue Deeks. I suppose they are too busy showing repeats of Eastenders.
In 2009, I intend to switch the focus of my Dae Jang Geum campaign from the BBC and turn my efforts to Channel 4.
In October 2006, Channel 4's film channel, Film4, showed 'Lady Vengence' as part of their Korean film season 'Brilliant Korea'. Having already shown a Lee Young Ae film, Channel 4 may just be interested in showing such a successful Korean drama as Dae Jang Geum.

Dae Jang Geum - A Story of Friendship, Love and Courage
The real Jang Geum (as mentionned in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty) would have been amazed to see her life story dramatised and watched by millions of viewers in the 21st century.

Dae Jang Geum is often referred to as the story of a little girl growing up in 15th century Korea, who eventually became the country's first female Royal Physician. That is certainly Jang Geum's ultimate achievement. The drama's rich and accurate representation of Korean Culture & Royal Cuisine is a visual delight, and has been applauded by critics. But, the true beauty of this 50-hour drama lies in the many layers of friendship and love woven throughout, and can only be appreciated by watching Dae Jang Geum yourself.

It does not seem to matter if we are in 15th century Korea, or 21st century Britain. We all love Jang Geum as if we really knew her. We follow her plights, share her joys, inspired by her will to 'never give up'. We identify ourselves with the characters from the drama, and that is when we realise the Universal appeal that has made Dae Jang Geum such a success.

The true meaning of the 'Show DJG on BBC' Campaign
On the surface, the 'Show DJG on BBC' Campaign is "one girl's plight to have Dae Jang Geum shown in the UK" (as someone once put it). But 'Show DJG on BBC' has shown itself to be much more.
With over 56,600 visitors to this website since April 2006, and 719 signatures on the 'Show DJG on BBC' petition, the Campaign has united Dae Jang Geum fans from around the World. It is thanks to supporters like you, that has kept the spirit of Dae Jang Geum alive.

Film Nights at The Korean Cultural Centre in London

February 2008 saw the opening of the long-awaited Korean Cultural Centre in London. A few steps away from Trafalgar Square, it is a treasure trove filled with Korean resources, and home to many exciting events, including the popular 'Korean Film Nights'.

Last Thursday I attended the 'Korean Film Night' screening of The Way Home. The film tells the story of Sang-woo, a young spoilt boy from Seoul, who is taken by his mother to live for a while with his deaf-and-mute grandmother in a tiny rural village. At first the boy rejects his grandmother and her 'odd' way of life (with no pizza or 'Kentucky chicken'), but gradually, he learns to love her. It was a touching and enjoyable film. My only regret was that this was the 5th Korean Film Night, which meant I had missed out on the earlier 4 screenings.

Jang Geum's Dream
The success of Dae Jang Geum inspired an animated series

October 2005 saw the release of a new animated series in Korea called 'Jang Geum's Dream'.

Following the enormous success of Dae Jang Geum when it was first aired in 2003, Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (the producers of Dae Jang Geum) decided to create an animated series for the younger fans of the drama.

The cartoon focuses on Jang Geum's life of growing up in the Palace. It took two years to produce, and cost 3 billion Korean won (US $2,877,698). The animated series has been exported to Hong Kong, China and Japan.

Dae Jang Geum has now been exported to 60 countries

The Korean wave is now spreading beyond Asia to Eastern European countries and even Africa.

MBC's Dae Jang Geum (aka 'Jewel in the Palace') is now airing in Turkey on TRT-TV, a government-run television station. It is the first Korean drama to be aired in the country. Other Eastern European countries such Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Macedonia have also signed contracts with MBC to air Dae Jang Geum later this year.

Last year, Dae Jang Geum was aired in Nigeria, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The drama enjoyed success particularly in Zimbabwe, where a 'DJG Quiz Show' on national TV attracted 4.8 million viewers.

Dae Jang Geum has been exported to a total of 60 countries so far, a first for a Korean drama.

Dae Jang Geum to be shown in Hungary

Korean historical drama Dae Jang Geum will be broadcast for the first time in a European country. The Korean Embassy in Budapest announced on Friday 11th January that Dae Jang Geum will be shown on Hungary's national television channel MTV from February 2008.

A representative from MTV said Dae Jang Geum (also known as "Jewel in the Palace") was chosen for its cultural and educational values, as well as its high marketability. The Korean ambassador said that airing the series on Hungarian national television will be instrumental in introducing Korean culture to Hungary and the rest of Europe.

London Korean Film Festival 2007

Opening Gala - Friday 2nd November

Last Friday I was lucky enough to be invited to the Opening Gala of the London Korean Film Festival for a preview screening of Palme d’Or nominee Breath. The latest film from the critically acclaimed director Kim Ki-duk, Breath received a 10 minute standing ovation on its premiere in Cannes earlier this year.

The evening was introduced by special guests His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Dr. Cho Yoon-je (pictured right), and Breath's lead actress Park Ji-ah (above).

Following the film, a reception was held in the Barbican's Garden Room and Conservatory, where I had the chance to speak with Ambassador Cho Yoon-je, who thanked me for my work with the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign.

The Korean Film Festival runs until Thursday 8th November at the Barbican, after which the Festival will go on tour, visiting Warwick and Oxford.

Chuseok! Korean Harvest Festival

The British Museum will be holding a Chuseok festival from 12pm today. I only heard about this event at the last minute, after receiving an email from a 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' supporter last night. Activities will include folk dancing, performances by Dulsori, and 'soap sculpting' workshops.

Best of all, highlights from Dae Jang Geum will be shown in the 323 seated BP Lecture Theatre at 3pm. I cannot believe that finally, Dae Jang Geum is being introduced to a UK audience! This is such a great opportunity for the British public to discover this epic and beautiful drama:

Dano Summer Festival in London's Trafalgar Square

On Sunday 17th June, following my early morning piano lesson, I headed off to Trafalgar Square for 'Dano - Korea Sparkling Summer Festival'. The event, celebrating the Korean summer festival Dano, was organised by the Korean Cultural Promotion Agency.

As I arrived in Trafalgar Square I was greeted by a young girl handing out programmes. Soon it was time for the Grand Parade at noon, featuring musicians and dancers from the Yeongsan Company of Traditional Arts (flown in from Korea especially for this event).

My favourite part of the day was the Korean fan dance performance. As the dancers walked onto the stage, 'oohs' and 'aahs' could be heard from the audience entranced by the beautiful hanboks and vibrant coloured fans.

It was a fun-packed afternoon, and Europe's first Dano event provided a fascinating insight into the culture of Korea; featuring Korean cuisine, music and dance.

Response from the BBC

Regarding the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign

Members of my 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Email Group and the Dae Jang Geum Comic Relief Forum will already know that recently I have been in contact with Sue Deeks, Head of Series Acquisitions at the BBC.

The last time I contacted 'Deeks nim' about Dae Jang Geum was back in November 2005, months before this website was launched.

Today, I received a written response from the BBC:

"Dear Alice Bennell,
Thank you for email, letter and the DVD of your 'Show DJG on BBC' campaign.
Having now had the opportunity to view the DVD I can see why you are such a fan of the drama but unfortunately, as I explained in my previous email, BBC Four simply does not have the capacity to air such a long running foreign language series. If you look at BBC Four's schedules you will see that other than weekly foreign language films, there are very few slots for acquired foreign language programming - on average we play one drama series a year, usually of no more than 8 or 10 episodes. As with any BBC Channel, most of BBC Four's output is made or commissioned by the BBC and the acquisition slots are limited by the BBC Charter.
I'm very sorry not to have better news.

Please be assured that this will not be the end of the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign. Although for now, it seems unlikely the BBC will acquire Dae Jang Geum until it becomes wider known in the Western world.

Dae Jang Geum - The Musical!

The popular Korean historical drama, Dae Jang Geum (aka Jewel in the Palace) is to be made into a musical.

Actors Kim So Hyun (as Jang Geum), and Won Ki Jun (Sir Min) posed for photos during a ceremony to mark the launch of a musical version of the historical TV drama Dae Jang Geum.

"Dae Jang Geum has aired in 50 countries, so its storyline is well-known and it has name value." said Song Seung-hwan, the musical’s producer. “We have here today people from a Chinese theatre, a Japanese broadcaster and a Singaporean stage company. They are very interested in the musical Dae Jang Geum, and want to show it in their countries."

The musical's production company PMC is already famous for creating the hit percussion dance show "Nanta." PMC says it will focus on the Korean market this year with shows in July in Daegu and at Seongnam Arts Center south of Seoul in August. The company will then seek to hold performances next year in Southeast Asia and other countries. Dae Jang Geum as a musical could further spread Korean culture throughout the world.

The musical has already been shown in countries outside Korea. Most recently, Japan has purchased rights to produce the Dae Jang Geum musical. I am sure that one day, the Dae Jang Geum musical could also prove to be a great success in the UK.

The story focuses mainly on the love story between Sir Min and Jang Geum. It is very hard to condense a 54-hour drama into a musical lasting only a couple of hours, and this seems to have been the main issue that the musical's directors have had to deal with.

Kimchi - Korea's National Dish

Kimchi, the national dish of Korea, is a traditional dish of fermented chilli pepper and vegetables, usually based on Chinese cabbage. In Korea, kimchi is served with nearly every meal, and is also used as an ingredient in cooking, including kimchi soup, kimchi stew and kimchi pancakes.

Originally kimchi consisted mainly of salted vegetables, as chilli peppers were not available in Korea until they were introduced by Portuguese traders coming from Japan in the 16th century. Traditionally, it was fermented in pots buried in the ground, to serve as a winter supply when fresh vegetables were not available.

Dae Jang Geum to be shown in Russia

MBC (Munwha Broadcasting Corporation) announced on the 9th February that Dae Jang Geum will be dubbed into Russian and shown daily at 8pm on Russia's DVTRK from March 2007.

DVTRK commented, "The success story of a rising female will appeal to the sentiment of Russians. As the eastern region also holds an Asian sentiment, we hope the area can serve as a gateway for Korean culture to spread throughout Russia."

Based on a true story, Dae Jang Geum chronicles the incredible life story of Jang Geum, Korea's first female Royal Physician. The role of young Jang Geum was played by a precocious 7-year-old actress named Jo Jung Eun. Chosen from over 400 hopefuls, she was originally cast as the young Yeon Sang (Jang Geum's best friend in the drama), before being offered the role of 'Little Jang Geum'.

Traditional Korean Music

Gugak (traditional Korean music) shared a cultural background with China and Japan. But despite some superficial similarities, anyone who has heard gugak can tell it is clearly different from other East Asian music. Korean music has a triple rhythm (three beats per bar), while Chinese and Japanese music have two beats per bar.

Gugak can be divided into two types: jeong-ak (music of the upper classes) and minsogak (folk music). Jeong-ak has a slow, solemn, and complicated melody, while minsogak, such as nong-ak (farmers' music), pansori (epic solo song) and shamanistic music, is fast and vigorous.

Dae Jang Geum in India

On Saturday 24th September, Korean drama Dae Jang Geum began airing in India during prime time on the country’s state-owned DDTV. It will be shown over the next two years. The Korean Embassy in India said that they have seen locals respond very enthusiastically to the drama:

“Indian viewers who watched (Dae Jang Geum) told us that they marveled at the colourful royal costumes and various foods, and that the way the drama is unfolding is very unique and mysterious, causing curiosity,” said a representative.

Hopefully this new development will finally persuade the BBC to air Dae Jang Geum in the UK.

Traditional Korean Heating System - Ondol

Made by putting mud over under-floor heating stones, Ondol is a main feature of traditional Korean houses. The floor of an Ondol room is made of flat stones and mud, and pathways of smoke are beneath the flat stones. A stove and chimney are outside the Ondol room at the entrance, and the exit of smoke is through a pathway beneath the floor.

When the stove is lit, hot smoke flows beneath the under-floor heating stones and warms the room. Outside, the stove is used for cooking. Inside the Ondol room, the floor is covered with thick, glossy paper which is always kept very clean. Koreans always take off their shoes when entering a house.

The Ondol under-floor heating system has a history of more than 2000 years. In modern Korean houses, the Ondol is still used; but hot water is used instead of smoke to warm the floor.

Happy Birthday, Yang Mi-Kyung!

Tuesday 25th July marks the birthday of Yang Mi-Kyung, the Korean actress who played Lady Han in Dae Jang Geum. Yang Mi-Kyung was awarded MBC's Special Performance Prize in 2003 for her exceptional portrayal of Lady Han. In the drama, Lady Han is one of the teachers of the Royal Kitchen, and a mentor to Jang Geum. Strict in her principles, yet warm-hearted; she loves Jang Geum like a daughter.

The character of Lady Han was probably the most diverse role in Dae Jang Geum; as she needed to maintain a cold exterior but at the same time show the audience she had a weaker and softer side, which she rarely showed to outsiders.

Friendship Year between Korea and Britain

Planned in accordance with an agreement between Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun and Prime Minister Tony Blair, Think Korea 2006 is an exciting programme of Korean events taking place in Britain this year.

This cultural event marks a friendship year between Korea and Britain, which aims to enhance cultural exchange and understanding between the two countries. Events on traditional Korean culture, art and technology will be held in Britain throughout 2006. In turn, Britain will host a variety of events in Korea next year.

Think Korea 2006 is an ideal opportunity for BBC to introduce Dae Jang Geum to the UK. Unfortunately, 2006's friendship year with Korea is actually little known in Britain. The Korean events already taken place have been a success (such as Korean Day at the V&A). However, I feel so much more could be done in the UK to increase awareness and make Think Korea 2006 the great international cultural event it should be.

A visual feast of traditional Korean culture, Dae Jang Geum is renowned for its informative and entertaining aspects of Oriental Medicine & Royal Korean Cuisine. By introducing this Korean historical drama to the UK, BBC will not only be contributing to Think Korea 2006, but also enlightening the British public to the richness of traditional Korean culture. This is an important opportunity for Korean culture to flourish and be known to the people of Britain.

The Dae Jang Geum Theme Park

The outdoor set used for the filming of Dae Jang Geum has been renovated into a theme park. Located in Gyeonggi-do Province, South Korea; the theme park is situated within MBC's Yangju Culture Valley.

There are numerous replicas of a Royal Office from the Joseon Dynasty, ministerial chambers and commoners' inns. Visitors are shown highlights from the drama and learn about Royal Korean Cuisine from the show's food consultant.

There are also many exciting Korean traditions to experience, including riding a gama (Korean sedan chair), trying on hanbok (traditional Korean dress) and playing a game of tuho (arrow tossing).

The inspirational story of Dae Jang Geum is to be included in the syllabus of elementary schools in Hong Kong. Defined as 'The Spirit of Jang Geum', the new syllabus requirement encourages "a straight, tough, diligent mentality and love of learning and creativity while not being arrogant or subservient and is filled with love that shows us never to abandon our goals in life".

Traditional Korean Dance

Traditional Korean dance is generally divided into two categories, folk dance and court dance. Folk dance expressed the lives and emotions of the common people and is often vigourous and rhythmic. Court dance is much more reserved, a style that is often described as chong joong dong (motion within stillness). The movements are elegant, graceful, flowing, and restrained. Below I will introduce examples of folk and court dances.

Folk Dance
Poongmul Dance Nong-ak (traditional farmers dance) is a strenuous form of folk dance. Dancers rotate their heads producing long spirals with the white ribbons attached to the crown of their hats:

Hwa-gwan mu (flower crown dance) is one of the oldest forms of Korean court dance. Believed to have originated from the Shilla dynasty (57BC-935AD), it was performed by court dancers at banquets for royalty and foreign envoys:

Dae Jang Geum to be shown in Jordan

The popularity of Dae Jang Geum has spread into the Middle East. Rights to air the Korean drama have recently been bought by Jordan's top distributor MEM. The deal was struck after MEM introduced a few episodes of Dae Jang Geum to its Jordanian viewers in February, which proved to be a great success.

In addition, Dae Jang Geum is currently airing in Egypt. With Arabic subtitles, the drama is broadcasted four times a week on Egyptian state-run ERTU (Egyptian Radio and Television Union).

"We expect that Dae Jang Geum will leave quite a new and fresh impression on Arab viewers in the Middle East" said Park Jae-yang, a public information officer at the South Korean Embassy in Egypt.

Korean Day at the V&A Museum in London

Korean Day was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum on 27th May as part of the London Korean Festival. With activities ranging from photographic exhibitions of Seoul to a traditional Korean musical, there was something for everyone.

My day began with a spectacular Samulnori performance in the V&A's John Madejski Garden, by Korean percussion group Dulsori. Traditional Korean drumming is truly the Stomp before Stomp. Drummers play the same rhythm with perfect synchronization. The display of energy, virtuosity and speed made for a greatly entertaining show.

In the afternoon, I visited the Seoul photo exhibition and sampled some Korean tea (rice tea and a slightly sweeter cinnamon tea) in the Raphael Room. Meanwhile, the Samsung Gallery of Korean Art featured treasures from Korean history. My day ended with a traditional Korean musical 'Oh! Youran' in the Lecture Theatre, and a short performance by a Korean chamber music group.

The event was free thanks to the generous sponsorship of patrons. Kyu Hak Choi, Director of the Korean Cultural Centre, said: "Korean culture has been relatively unknown in UK. I welcome the many efforts to promote Korean culture in the UK. I hope many people who visit will be able to enjoy the real beauty of Korea."

Hanbok- Traditional Korean Dress

Hanbok literally means 'Korean Dress' and is characterized by its vibrant colours and simple lines. Hanboks worn today are patterned after those worn during the Confucian-oriented Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Women's hanboks comprise of a wrap-around skirt and a jacket. It is often called 'chima-jeogori', chima meaning skirt and jeogori meaning jacket. Men's hanboks consist of a short jacket, and trousers called 'baji', that are loose-fitting and bound at the ankles. Hanboks are often complimented by a long coat, called 'durumagi'.

Asiana Airlines unveils "Jewel in the Sky"

"Korean culture will be traveling the world for the next year as part of a stunt to promote Korea. And it will be done using Korea's most popular TV drama..." Reports Anna Chan on NTD TV.

South Korea's commercial airline Asiana Airlines unveiled a new 'Dae Jang Geum' aeroplane last week. Named after the popular Korean drama, the jet will fly for one year to Japan, China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia in a bid to promote Korean culture. Asiana Airlines is also planning to serve Korean dishes showcased in Dae Jang Geum to its passengers.

The Hanja Writing System

Hanja is the Korean name for Chinese Characters, which were introduced to Korea more than two thousand years ago. In Dae Jang Geum, as in history, most documents were written in hanja. It was the sole means of writing Korean until King Sejong invented hangul (the Korean alphabet) in the 15th century.

Before the invention of hangul, Koreans had a dual system of literacy: hanmun (classical Chinese) for the upper class, and idu (a system of writing Korean sounds in Chinese characters) for the middle class.

King Sejong's invention led to an increase in literacy, but the conservative Confucian intellectuals objected to this new script. Therefore, in Dae Jang Geum, you will see that official documents are still written in hanja. It was not until the 20th century that Hangul completely replaced Hanja.

The success of Dae Jang Geum in the Philippines

Produced by MBC (Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation) in 2003, Dae Jang Geum has enjoyed a phenomenal success around the world in the past few years. So far the drama has aired not only in South Korea, but also China, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Brunei, Iran, the US, and more recently, the Philippines.

Dae Jang Geum (also known as Jewel in the Palace) is currently the highest rated drama on Pinoy TV Station GMA Network. Last month, Korean actresses Jo Jung-Eun (who played Jang Geum as a child) and Yang Mi-Kyung (who played Court Lady Han) paid a visit to Manila. The stars were overwhelmed by the warm welcome they received from fans. You can read more about their visit on GMA Network.

The Philippines loved Dae Jang Geum so much they commissioned a song as a tribute to the drama, called 'Pangarap na Bituin' (The Dream Star). Life as a Palace Maid in the Joseon Dynasty

Founded in 1392 and lasting until 1910, the Joseon Dynasty was the longest of continuously ruling royal dynasties in world history. The story of Dae Jang Geum is set in the early 16th century, during the reign of Emperor JungJong (1506-1544). Before Jang Geum began her career as a physician, she worked as a Palace Maid. Palace Maids were responsible for preparing meals for everyone in the Imperial Palace. Food preparation was not seen as a daily chore, but as an art; and there was much rivalry between Palace Maids. Some Court Ladies even turned to corruption in their plight for power.

Living in a Palace and wearing beautiful clothes, the life of a Palace Maid might seem glamourous; but in reality it was a tragic life. They entered the Palace as children and usually spent their entire lives serving the Emperor. Palace Maids were seen as belonging to the Emperor, and so were not allowed to marry. They wore different coloured hanboks (traditional Korean dress) to reflect their position. There were four positions of Palace Maids, which I'll explain below.

Child Maids
Palace Maids are admitted into the Palace aged around 8 years old. They wear pink hanboks, and are given simple, often repetitive tasks to hone their culinary skills. Child maids are also responsible for carrying out the less desirable chores, such as washing up. They are each trained by a designated Court Lady, who will stay with them until the young maids become Court Ladies themselves.

Apprentice Maids
After several years of training, the now more experinced maids trade their pink hanboks for turquoise, and are given more challenging tasks. As they are still in the formative years of training, they spend much of their time observing the Court Ladies preparing meals for the Royal family. When their training period comes to an end, the apprentice maids sit a practical exam. Those who fail are throw out of the Palace.

Junior Maids
Those who successfully pass the exam are now fully qualified Junior Maids. They can now cook meals for the Royal family and also begin to help supervise the younger maids. Wearing red hanboks, they are still under the charge of their Court Lady, who keep a close eye on the Junior Maid's progress. At this stage, a Court Ladies' success depends on how well their Junior Maid has been trained.

Court Ladies
Court Ladies hold the highest position of the Royal Kitchen. After many years of service, they are both experienced and well respected. They are also the mentors of the next generation of Court Ladies. They wear green hanboks, the darkest of which is reserved for the most senior Court Ladies.

Royal Cuisine in the 16th Century

Welcome to 'Korean Insight', a series of articles exploring life in the Joseon dynasty. In each 'Korean Insight' article, I will introduce a different aspect of Korean culture. Hopefully it will increase your enjoyment of Dae Jang Geum when it does air on BBC. In this first article I will explore royal Korean cuisine in the 16th century.

Royal court food was the essence of Korean cuisine, consisting of specialties drawn from the most remote corners of the kingdom. Using the best ingredients from every region, the dishes reflected the diversity of Korea. The Emperor had five meals a day, including two main meals called sura. Sura was served with 12 different dishes along with a bowl of rice, a side dish of kimchi, and several kinds of porridge.

There was a balance of 'yin' and 'yang' among the variety of the side dishes, which were served in a specific arrangement according to the shape and colour of the ingredients. Meals were served in silver bowls, the colour of which would change if the contents were to contain any poison. Below I will introduce two popular dishes of traditional royal cuisine.

'Gujeolpan' (nine-sectioned dish) consists of nine divided sections which separates 8 different fillings such as vegetables and meat- and a stack of small, thin pancakes in the centre. This decorative dish usually preceeds the main meal.

'Sam Saek' glutinous rice cakes were a popular traditional Korean snack. Made from Chinese dates, pine nuts, honey and glutinous rice powder; this sticky dessert was loved for its particular texture and was often prepared for celebrations.

Dae Jang Geum Soundtrack

A beautifully written soundtrack is one reason why Dae Jang Geum became so successful. The fusion of Korean and Western music produces a uniquely mystical sound, without alienating those who may not enjoy traditional Korean music.

Onara is well-known as the main theme from Dae Jang Geum. Written in ancient Korean (which is very different to the Korean spoken today), the meaning of the song remained a mystery even to Koreans. Finally the songwriter revealed the meaning of the song as a tragic (yet oddly lively) lament reflecting the life of a Palace Maid; from being brought into the Palace as a wide-eyed young girl, to retiring after a lifetime of lonliness in the Palace. For the composer, this had to be a 'possible' 16th century Korean song, yet not sound like it was obviously written in 2003.

Ha-mang-yeon, the tranquil love theme, was sung by Italian tenor Alessandro Safina (who also lent his vocal talents to the film Moulin Rouge! in 2001). Known for his unique style of combining classical opera with modern music, Safina was an excellent choice to bring Ha-mang-yeon to life. It is an interesting point that a European opera singer was chosen rather than using a Korean tenor from Soeul. But this only highlights the attention to detail shown by the producers of Dae Jang Geum. In addition to singing Ha-mang-yeon in English - which is the main version, Safina also recorded a Korean version (which he pulled off very well).
The instrumental version of Ha-mang-yeon is a wonderfully moving peace, which really showcases the brilliance and versatility of traditional Korean instruments; in particular the Korean flute, which carries the main melody in the second half of the piece.

"Korean soap operas are capturing American hearts" writes Jaymes Song from Associated Press. The 'Korean craze' has swept through China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and is now making its way across the United States:
"...a growing number of Americans with no connection to Korean culture who say the shows (Korean dramas) are a more compelling and wholesome alternative to the usual daytime programming on American TV."

The actors in Dae Jang Geum could not have imagined in their wildest dreams that this drama would be so popular overseas. But then the story of Dae Jang Geum is Universal. Throughout the series, viewers are treated to historically accurate depictions of the Korean royal palace, cuisine and medical treatments of the Joseon dynasty. Viewers are also touched by Jang Geum's perseverance, compassion, empathy, humility and courage.

It has now been two years since Dae Jang Geum was aired in the US. When will the BBC finally see the potential of Dae Jang Geum, and introduce this powerful historical drama to the UK?

'ThaiDay' recently reported the overwhelming popularity of Dae Jang Geum in Thailand; and that no drama series in recent memory has been so popular. Surin Krittayapongphan, vice-president of marketing and sales of Bangkok Entertainment, said the popularity of Dae Jang Geum has proved that Thai audiences do not always prefer 'cheesy' dramas:

"Thai series are not creative, but they allow the audience to release stresses and forget problems in daily life. But good drama should benefit the audience's brain and improve their thoughts. It would be great if the producers understand the psychology of human nature".

Lee Young Ae of 'Lady Vengence' takes the lead role in 'Jewel in the Palace', a Korean historical drama (known as Dae Jang Geum in Korea and Da Chang Jin in China). Based on the historical figure depicted in the Annals of Joseon Dynasty, the drama focuses on Jang Geum, the first female royal physician of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea.
