Response from the BBC
Regarding the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign
Members of my 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Email Group and the Dae Jang Geum Comic Relief Forum will already know that recently I have been in contact with Sue Deeks, Head of Series Acquisitions at the BBC.
The last time I contacted 'Deeks nim' about Dae Jang Geum was back in November 2005, months before this website was launched.
Today, I received a written response from the BBC:
"Dear Alice Bennell,
Thank you for email, letter and the DVD of your 'Show DJG on BBC' campaign.
Having now had the opportunity to view the DVD I can see why you are such a fan of the drama but unfortunately, as I explained in my previous email, BBC Four simply does not have the capacity to air such a long running foreign language series. If you look at BBC Four's schedules you will see that other than weekly foreign language films, there are very few slots for acquired foreign language programming - on average we play one drama series a year, usually of no more than 8 or 10 episodes. As with any BBC Channel, most of BBC Four's output is made or commissioned by the BBC and the acquisition slots are limited by the BBC Charter.
I'm very sorry not to have better news.
Kind regards,
Sue"
Please be assured that this will not be the end of the 'Show Dae Jang Geum on BBC' Campaign. Although for now, it seems unlikely the BBC will acquire Dae Jang Geum until it becomes wider known in the Western world.
The BBC Charter, for anyone who is interested, can be found here.

hm...maybe you could suggest one of the shorter dramas to start? like full house, kim sam soon, or damo. i don't see what's wrong with DJG being long, i mean it's not like the episodes get pointless or start dragging out...you could remind her how long other UK TV shows are! ah well, keep trying yunyun, we'll get there!

When DJG was aired in many countries, the viewer rate continuously increased to the end in every country.

And every people thought that the series was too short. And said "One important pleasure of my life is ended."

So, if BBC decide to air DJG, it would be recognized as the best decision that introduced real essence of Asian culture to Europe.

I hope BBC would not lose the chance to become the first.

Hi... I'd like to encourage you in your dreaming sharing Dae Jang Geum with as much people as you can. I don't know how it will happen as the letter was basically a polite "no, stop writing me," but I hope the petition is going well... I don't know if I should sign for a British petition since I live in another country. Fighting!

DJG recorded 86% viewer rate in Iran, which is much higher than in Korea or in any other countries. Especially in Teheran, it recorded over 90%.
DJG aired in Iran every Fri evening 8:00 pm from Oct 27th last year. Probably, they expected big hit even before airing it because they decided to air it on golden time.
It is very surprising because Iran has beeu a country outside Hallyu influence. In addition, Iran is a typical Muslim country, while DJG is on the base of Coufucianism.
I think the cultural difference between Korea and Iran is not less than that between Korea and UK.

Dear, Bennell

I am Nam Kyoung Lee who is working for the TV Mania Production.
We are trying to make special edition documentary for Hanguel(Korean Alphabet) Proclamation Day.

We have found you on-line that say you like drama(soap opera) DaeJangKum so much.
Moreover, you have done the signature-seeking campaign to UK BBC.

We really hope that you can prove and tell us how great,
scientific and the world best phonogram Hanguel is, as foreigner.
Because we believe, it is more effective than Koreans' speech.
We really would like to ask you the favor, to be our guest as an interviewer.

We are appreciate if you answer those questions before the interview.
1. Are you interested in other things besides Korean culture?

2. Are you only interested in Korean drama?

3. May I have your contac number or e-mail address?

4. If you have any enquiries or questions about this programme,

please send e-mail to zinac@naver.com

Thank you very much for your time.

Nam Kyoung Lee

I think UK people might have never imagined to diagnose pregnance by feeling pulses, which has a long history in Korea and still going on in Korea.

UK people may not believe to treat a disease by a single puncture on the special point of body using a needle, which is still widely used in Korea.

oh how i love England to show korean drama on tv, or BBC just to open a new channel only for korean or asian subtitled drama.

for a short korean drama as you say we have Damo. its got to be better than watching corrie which is 3 times a week on for 25 years.

other korean drama which i would love to se on the big screen is Hae shin, Ju-mong, the immortal Lee shin

btw, for a lover of Dae JangGeum, have you seen the korean anime? or visited the korean folk village in Korea?

DJG has been a big hit in philippines, malaysia, korea and i'm sure many other places that love the culture. come on Brits, take a risk
